QUESTION:

Hi, Bob,

Any tips for working with a horse that is afraid of having people higher than her head?

We suspect she’s been mishandled, but don’t have much info. — would appreciate any tips.

Thanks.

ANSWER:

Actually, that’s a fairly common trait among horses, and not necessarily a sign of abuse. The usual solution is to “pony” the horse… have a rider on horseback lead it around for a while until it gets used to the idea of having a human way up above it. Even just sitting on the top rail of a fence while petting and talking to the horse seems to help.

Keep me posted on how things work out.

Happy Horse Training!
