If’n – Contraction of “if and when.” Sometimes spelled “iffen” or “ifen.” Most common in rural areas of the southern U.S. “I’ll go to town tomorrow if’n I get my haying done.”
Indian Broke – A horse trained to be mounted from either side.
Indian Side – The right (or “Off”) side of a horse. So called because Indians often mounted on the right side.
Inexpressibles – A 19th century euphemism for underwear. Also called “Unmentionables.”
Interfere – To strike one foot against the opposite foot or ankle in using the legs; usually said of a horse, as, “That horse doesn’t run well because he interferes.”
Iron Horse – A railroad steam engine.
Ironman – A cowhand who tends to the branding irons to ensure that they are the proper temperature.
Isabella – A horse of almost any color except black with a light mane and tail. A Palomino is a type of Isabella.
