Quarter Crack – A crack that runs from the coronet band down into the hoof.
Quarter Horse – A horse originally bred for sprinting in quarter-mile races in colonial America.
Quarter Straps – See Spider Straps.
Quidding – Dropping of partially chewed feed by a horse. Quidding may be caused by dental problems or cranial nerve damage.
Quirt – Likely derived from the German word for whip, Gerte. A weighted, short-handled whip with a leather popper or lash at one end and a hand loop at the other. Not very useful when applied to the rider’s horse, it is more useful for moving cattle when working within a herd.
Quittor – An infection of cartilage in the foot extending through the skin in the coronet — the soft tissue above the hoof — which may result from a puncture wound through the sole. Symptoms may incude lameness, heat, swelling, or a foul-smelling discharge. Rare today, it used to be common in working draft horses.
